What to Expect During a Crown Procedure

  • To install a crown takes 2 to 3 trips to your dentist.
  • During the first visit, the tooth that will receive the crown will be reshaped by filing the enamel so the crown can be placed over it.
  • A local anesthetic will be administered before this part of the procedure so there is no discomfort.
  • When the tooth is reshaped, a mold will be taken of that tooth and the surrounding teeth.
  • The mold will be sent to a dental lab so the crown can be made. The crown will fit over the existing tooth and will look the same relative to the surrounding teeth.
  • Before leaving the office, your dentist will provide you with a temporary crown until the permanent crown is ready.
  • It will take about 2 to 3 weeks for the crown to return from the lab. At this time, you will have another appointment to place and fit the permanent crown.
  • A local anesthetic will be used to numb the area and the tooth will be placed using a cement to ensure the crown stays in place.
  • The next day when you look in the mirror, you will see a brand new smile. Crowns are durable and can last as many as 15 to 20 years.
  • Care for your crown as you would for any of your other teeth.
  • Brush and floss regularly and use an antiseptic mouthwash to rinse.
