Key Components of Dental Hygiene

  • Frequency: Brush at least twice a day—once in the morning and once before bed.
  • Technique: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush in gentle, circular motions. Make sure to brush the front, back, and chewing surfaces of each tooth, as well as your tongue to help remove bacteria and freshen your breath.
  • Toothpaste: Use fluoride toothpaste, as fluoride helps to strengthen enamel and prevent cavities.

Duration: Brush for at least 2 minutes each time to ensure all surfaces of your teeth are properly cleaned.

  • Frequency: Floss at least once a day, preferably before bed.
  • Technique: Use about 18 inches of dental floss. Gently slide the floss between your teeth and curve it around each tooth to remove plaque and food particles. Be sure to floss both the sides of each tooth, especially in areas that your toothbrush can’t reach.

Flossing Tools: If traditional flossing is difficult, you can use dental tools like floss picks, interdental brushes, or a water flosser.

  • Purpose: Mouthwash can help to reduce bacteria, freshen breath, and provide additional fluoride to protect your teeth. It can also help with conditions like gingivitis or dry mouth.
  • Type: Use an antimicrobial mouthwash to fight bacteria or a fluoride mouthwash to help strengthen tooth enamel. Make sure to choose one without alcohol, which can be drying to the mouth.

When to Use: You can use mouthwash after brushing and flossing to provide an extra layer of protection, but it should not replace brushing and flossing.

  • Frequency: Visit your dentist at least twice a year (every 6 months) for a routine check-up and cleaning. Your dentist can check for early signs of tooth decay, gum disease, or other issues that may not be obvious.
  • Professional Cleaning: Even with good at-home care, plaque and tartar can build up in places that are hard to reach. A dental professional can remove tartar (hardened plaque) that can’t be removed by brushing alone.

Early Detection: Regular visits allow for early detection of problems, which can prevent more severe issues down the line.

  • Limit Sugary and Acidic Foods
  • Eat Tooth-Friendly Foods
  • Avoid Snacking Frequently
  • Drink water after meals
  • Hydrate after brushing
  • Avoid sugary drinks

Importance of Dental Hygiene

Additional Tips for Maintaining Good Dental Hygiene

Electric toothbrushes can be more effective at removing plaque and reducing gum disease than manual brushing, especially for people who have difficulty brushing thoroughly.

Change your toothbrush (or toothbrush head, if using an electric toothbrush) every 3-4 months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.

For additional cavity prevention, especially in children and teens, dental sealants can be applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth to protect them from decay.

Smoking or using smokeless tobacco increases your risk of gum disease, oral cancer, and tooth staining.

Signs of Poor Dental Hygiene

Poor dental hygiene has been linked to several systemic health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Keeping your mouth healthy can reduce your risk for these conditions.

By following a good dental hygiene routine and visiting your hygienist/dentist regularly, you can keep your teeth and gums healthy and avoid more serious dental problems.
